Information for first-semester students
A degree program (Bachelor/Master) consists of a number of study modules (a module is, for example, a lecture with exercises). Once you have successfully completed a module, you receive a certain number of credit points. The modules are examined immediately after they have been completed.
Start of studies
The course generally begins in the fall semester. As the modules build on each other, an application to start in the spring will only be approved in exceptional cases.
Matriculation & Admission
Enrollment is required to study at the University of Zurich. This takes place after applying to the Registrar's Office.
You can apply online via the University of Zurich Registrar's Office website.
After successful admission, enrollment via the student portal is required to study at UZH. All students must be enrolled for as long as they require university services. This includes, in particular, attending courses, making use of advising and support services, using libraries and collections, using the Center for Information Technology Services, taking examinations, and validating your degree certificate.
Course catalogue
The mathematics course catalogue contains important information on the individual courses. In particular, it lists the conditions for obtaining credit points.
Study regulations
The study regulations of the Faculty of Science are the regulations on which the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs are based.
Modules
Courses of the current semester
The study program is made up of modules. A performance record is defined for each module, which determines whether the module has passed or failed. Credit points (ECTS) are awarded for each module passed, the number of which reflects the workload for the module. The workload is made up of preparation, follow-up, and attendance time for the module.
Guidelines for awarding ECTS credit points:
- 1 ECTS credit point corresponds to approximately 30 hours of work
- The guideline for the scope of a semester for a full-time student is 30 credit points
- The Bachelor's program comprises 180 credit points
- The Master's program comprises 90 credit points without a minor and 120 with a minor
- The modules are divided into
- Compulsory module: mandatory for all students
- Core elective module: can be selected from a given pool
- Elective module: freely selectable from a subject or group of subjects
Module booking
Modules must be booked every semester. Module booking.
The registration deadlines are published in the course catalogue. When you book a module, you are automatically registered for the assessment/examination.
If you do not wish to take the assessment/examination, you must deregister within the cancellation period published in the course catalog.
If you have booked a module and do not take the performance record or simply do not take the examination, the module is considered failed.
Examinations
Module examinations
The examination period in which the module examinations take place is specified individually for each module in the study regulations and the course catalogue. When enrolling for a module, the student is automatically registered for the module examination.
No written invitations to written examinations are sent out.
There is one examination date and one retake date per module. These are published on the MNF website.
Exam results
Exam results can be viewed in your own account in the performance overview as soon as they are known.
Repetition options
Failed module examinations can be repeated once (and only once) for each module on the next repetition date.
Registration for the retake date is required. Registration takes place in the Student Portal in the “Modules” app under “Registration for repeat examination”.
If this examination date is not attended, the entire module must be repeated.
